Most baby bedding sets will include many different items, but you might find that you don’t really need them all. Most pediatricians now recommend keeping the crib free from any extra bedding, so all you really need is a crib sheet. Babies are a messy lot, so 4 or 5 crib sheets will serve you well. Spend your money on getting really good sheets, instead of on a designer bedding set that isn’t even recommended to stay in the crib.
It may come as a surprise to some, but neither crib bumpers nor blankets are recommended because they are a suffocation hazard. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Sleep sacks are worn like clothing, but have a closed “bag” at the legs to keep baby warm.
If you interested in a swaddling blanket, you might want to investigate some of the more modern styles that aid in getting the right fit. Swaddling is supposed to mimic the close quarters of the uterus, and it comforts many newborns. A comforter can still be a good idea to keep on hand for wrapping your baby while you’re holding them. But remove the comforter before baby goes into the crib.
A foam sleep wedge might seem like a good idea, since it is meant to reduce a newborn’s risk of SIDS. But a young baby is unable to roll onto his tummy anyway - just put him to bed on his back and you should be fine. Soft bedding of any kind should be kept out of the crib due to suffocation concerns, and these foam wedges are themselves soft.
Other items included in a bedding set can include a window valance, diaper stacker, toy bag, and crib skirt. These can make the nursery look great, but aren’t necessary if you’re on a budget.
But most parents are going to want a bedding set anyway, just for the look of the nursery. In this case, try neutral baby bedding like Hot Cocoa baby bedding. It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.
